Ally Mooney enters her first season as an assistant coach with Delaware field hockey in 2025 after being hired in April of 2025.
"I am thrilled to welcome Ally Mooney as our assistant field hockey coach at the University of Delaware,” Zollinger said. “Ally is a passionate coach, an inspiring competitor, and a true teacher of the game. Through her multi-championship winning student-athlete career and the variety in her coaching roles, she knows exactly what it takes to elevate a team environment to success and achievement. With her high energy, fast work rate, and unwavering commitment to creating an impactful student-athlete experience, Ally will undoubtedly play a key role in the future success of our program.”
Mooney comes to Newark after spending the previous three seasons under Zollinger at DII Shippensburg, where she served as the program’s defensive coordinator. She led a unit that sat atop the nation in goals against average (0.80) and scoring margin (+2.71), while sitting third in shutouts per game (0.48).
“I am thrilled and honored to join the University of Delaware as an assistant field hockey coach,” Mooney said. “It’s a privilege to be part of a program with a tradition of excellence and a bright future. I’m especially excited to continue working alongside Coach Zollinger as we build and foster a culture of hard work, resilience, and a championship mindset. I’m incredibly grateful to her for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be part of this next chapter together. I can’t wait to keep growing with her and our incredible student-athletes, as well as the whole Blue Hen community. Thank you to the entire athletics administration for this amazing opportunity. Go Hens!”
In charge of the Raider goalkeepers, Mooney oversaw the emergence of Emma Albee in goal (NCAA Division II-leading .821 save percentage) and helped guide the Raiders to the PSAC Championship game and the NCAA Division II Semifinals during the 2023 season.
Mooney joined the coaching staff at her alma mater in 2022, and helped guide the Raiders to their second-consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship Game appearance.
That season, goalkeeper Lindsay Tripodo’s historic 22-save effort in SU’s NCAA Division II Semifinal victory over West Chester – the second most saves in a single game in NCAA Division II Tournament history – occurred under Mooney's tutelage.
Mooney returned to Shippensburg after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Appalachian State University, contributing to numerous accomplishments with the Mountaineers. In 2021, Mooney helped lead the Mountaineers to their first win over a ranked opponent in program history with a 2-0 shutout of James Madison. In 2019, Mooney helped lead App State to its first winning season since 2003 and set a program best for wins to begin a season with a 6-0 start.
Among the players Mooney coached at App State include the school’s first-ever conference player of the year and three All-MAC performers overall. Mooney's work with goalkeepers Rachel Gaines and Addie Clark also helped App State post seven shutouts in 2019, including five in the team's first six games.
As a student-athlete at Shippensburg, Mooney was a starting goalkeeper who helped the Raiders win three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships from 2016-18. She registered a 68-16 record and had an incredible .816 save percentage, recording 24 shutouts between the posts and allowing less than a goal per game over the course of her career.
Mooney was a two-time team captain and earned multiple awards during her collegiate career. Along with three national championships, Mooney was named an NFHCA All-American in 2014 and 2016. As a freshman, she earned a spot on the Synapse Sports All-Rookie Team after allowing just 0.76 goals per game.
Off the field, Mooney stayed involved in the game by serving as a coach for different organizations. She worked as an assistant coach for the USA Field Hockey Nexus & Futures Program. She also worked specifically with goalkeepers for X-Calibur Field Hockey Club and Core Hockey.
A native of Spring City, Pa., Mooney earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a minor in coaching in December 2018 and her master’s degree from Shippensburg in 2023 in organizational development and leadership with a concentration in business.
