Sebastien O'Neill joins the track & field program serving as an assistant coach ahead of the 2024-25 season. O'Neill will be responsible for the oversight of the sprints, jumps, and multis event groups with his appointment effective Aug. 5.
In his first year with the Blue Hens, the sprints, jumps and multis group made big strides. Under O'Neill's guidance, the Blue Hens had 24 new entries into the program's top 10 all-time performances, including a new program record in the pentathlon set by Sara Manson. Manson also earned a bronze medal in the pentathlon, as well as the heptathlon, at the indoor and outdoor CAA Championships.
O’Neill comes to Newark after serving as the associate head coach for the track & field and cross country programs at Milligan University for four seasons (2021-24). During his tenure at Milligan, O’Neill played a pivotal role in the cross country program becoming three-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national champions. Under his guidance, the track & field program achieved its highest national finishes in the Men's and Women's NAIA indoor track and field championships, placing eighth and fifth, respectively. O'Neill coached the program's first individual sprints All-Americans since 2019 and led the team to 12 Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships, including the first men's outdoor title in school history. He was instrumental in Milligan's historic triple crown achievement in the conference and qualified six athletes for the NAIA national championships, with four athletes earning NAIA All-American honors in relay events. O'Neill coached 14 individual Appalachian Athletic Conference champions and 39 podium finishers within three years.
Before Milligan, O'Neill spent four seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach at Louisburg College, where he oversaw the sprints, jumps, and hurdles event groups, in addition to assisting with the distance events. Under his leadership, Louisburg achieved its highest-ever finishes in indoor and outdoor track, secured a top-10 ranking in indoor track, and achieved a top-5 ranking in cross country. The college also earned its first-ever women's top 25 ranking in track and field. Recognized as the NJCAA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2021, O'Neill qualified 23 male and four female athletes for the NJCAA Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He also helped qualify the men's and women's cross country teams for the NJCAA Cross Country National Championship. O'Neill coached multiple athletes to regional Athlete of the Year honors and over 20 school records, headlined by standout performers like Sidney Littlejohn, Tayshaun Chisholm, and Kyle Hinson. His 400-meter hurdle group ranked second in the nation, and he helped NJCAA Louisburg beat 30 NCAA Division One and Two schools during the 2018 cross country season. Additionally, he qualified the college's first men's and women's sprints relay teams to NJCAA Nationals and sent over 20 athletes to Division I, Division II, and NAIA universities on scholarship.
O’Neill began his coaching career as a volunteer track & field coach at the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) (2017-18). There, he assisted in the development of athletes such as Elias Keter, who placed seventh in the 10,000 meters and sixth in cross country; Brandon McDonald, a former walk-on athlete, who placed fifth in the 1500 meters with a seven-second personal record improvement; and Kipkirui Victor, who placed eighth in the 10,000 meters. Additionally, the ULM women’s cross country team achieved their best finish in 2017.
A native of Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, O’Neill earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Speech in 2015 from Nicholls State University, followed by a Master’s Degree in Psychology with a concentration in Forensic Psychology in 2017 from ULM. O’Neill also ran a season of track at ULM after graduate transferring to the Warhawks Program. At ULM, he ran the 800 meters and 1500 meters finishing 18th at the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track Championships and helping the Warhawks DMR relay team place seventh at the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships.Prior to ULM, O’Neill was a member of Nicholls State’s cross country program, where he won a school record four Most Valuable Performer trophies and was elected team captain during his Senior Year.
