A three-sport standout in track and field, soccer, and basketball, Bill was an outstanding athlete and a life-long ardent supporter of UD athletics.
A 1941 graduate of the University of Delaware, Bill earned six varsity letters during his career and served as captain for the track and field and basketball squads. He led the basketball team in scoring as a senior in 1940-41 when he served as team captain.
Once called “the fastest human in Delaware”, he was a standout sprinter for the Blue Hens and after graduation was undefeated for seven years in the 440 and 880-yard dash events on the local track circuit. In 1978, at age 59, Bill set a Philadelphia Masters record for the 880 in the 55-60 year old category. He also enjoyed a 25-year career as a state, regional and national track official and was the starter for the Marty Liquori-Jim Ryun "Dream Mile" race in 1971 in Philadelphia.
He was an organizer and long-time director of officials for the Delaware Track and Field Club, working at numerous University indoor and outdoor track and field events.
He was one of the founders of the Wilmington Touchdown Club, serving as president for 32 years. He was inducted into the Delaware Sports and Museum Hall of Fame in 1994. He passed away at the age of 80 in 1997.
