FREDERICK W. “FRED” FREIBOTT
(1933-2011)

Men’s Track & Field (1953; 1957-59)
A four-year varsity letterwinner in swimming, Freibott enjoyed a record-breaking career as one of the top freestyler sprinters in Delaware history.
A native of Wilmington, Del., he set nine school freshman records in 1953 and then led the Blue Hens to the Middle Atlantic Conference team title in 1954 as he won the 50 and 100 freestyle events and the 300 freestyle relay and set seven more school records.
After serving two years with the Army in Korea, he returned to the U.S. and competed for three more seasons at UD, winning the 50 and 100 freestyle competitions at the Eastern Collegiate Swimming Championship regionals in 1957. He also won the 50 freestyle and was third in the 400 freestyle at the 1958 ECSA regionals.
He held pool records at 10 different schools at one point during his career. He also competed for the UD outdoor track & field team.
Fred earned his degree in physical education from Delaware in 1959 and his master’s degree from West Chester University in 1964. He served as director of athletics at The Tatnall School in Wilmington for 26 years and coached football, wrestling, and track and field. He also taught in the Christina School District and was pool director and a swim team coach at the Wilmington Country Club for 34 years.
He competed for many years as a Masters level swimmer and was inducted into the Peddie (N.J.) School Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. His wife, Martha, is a 1958 Delaware graduate. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 78.
