One of the most dedicated and versatile athletics coaches in UD history, “Coach Whiz” has lent his talents to the Blue Hen athletics program for nearly a half-century.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, he is a 1950 graduate of the University of Michigan where he was a standout football and basketball player, helping the Wolverines win the 1948 Rose Bowl and playing in the 1948 NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Coach Whiz served as Delaware’s offensive line coach in football from 1952-72, head men’s basketball coach from 1954-66, and men’s golf head coach from 1955-63 while also serving as a physical education professor.
During his tenure as assistant football coach under UD and National Football Foundation Hall of Famers Dave Nelson and Tubby Raymond, Blue Hen teams won three Small College National titles and seven Lambert Cup trophies as one of the most dominant teams in the East. His son, Mike, starred as a defensive lineman in 1977-79 and was a member of Delaware's 1979 NCAA II national title squad.
His 12-year head coaching tenure was the longest in UD men’s basketball history and his 111 coaching wins was the most for the Blue Hens until the early 1990's. He served as head coach of the golf team for eight seasons in 1955-63 and led the team to three top five finishes at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship tournament.
After retirement, Wisniewski remained an active fan of Blue Hen athletics and was active in taking U.S. college basketball all-star teams overseas for tournaments.
He passed away in 2014 at the age of 89.
