SHARON L. HOWETT
Women’s Basketball (1974-78)
Women’s Tennis (1975-78)
One of the most talented two-sport athletes in UD women’s athletics history, Howett was dominating on both the basketball court and the tennis court as a Blue Hen in the 1970’s.
A 1978 graduate of Delaware and a native of New Holland, Pa., Howett was a four-year standout for both teams and served as captain for each her senior year when she was named the UD Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year for 1977-78.
In basketball, playing for UD Hall of Fame head coach Mary Ann Hitchens, she averaged 15.6 points and 14.4 rebounds per game for her career and was the first player in UD history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. She also held Delaware's career rebounding record with 1,009 before Colleen McNamara broke the mark nearly 20 years later. She still holds the UD record for rebounds in a single game with 27 vs. Trenton State in 1976-77.
In tennis, Howett posted a career mark of 33-29 at No. 1 singles that stood as a record upon her graduation. She also was a three-time team captain.
Howett, who helped guide the women's basketball team to 45 victories (.634) while leading the tennis team to 27 team wins (.659), has remained active throughout her adult years by playing in tennis, basketball, volleyball and softball leagues.
