ANTONIO J. “TONY” TOTO
Football (1955-57)
Few players in the great history of Delaware football were as adept at running with the ball as Tony Toto.
A star fullback for the Hens during the 1950’s for Hall of Fame coach Dave Nelson, Tony led Delaware to a three-year mark of 17-7-1 and established several school records.
A native of Old Bridge, N.J., he earned All-American honors by the Associated Press and the United Press International in 1957 when he ran 84 times for a school-record 715 yards. His 143 yards per game that season, including back-to-back efforts of 183 yards vs. Temple and 169 yards vs. Bucknell, still stands as a school record with his 8.5 yards per carry the third best mark in UD annals.
He finished his career with 1,195 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing and his 6.39 yards per carry was No. 2 all-time.
After earning his degree in plant pathology and entomology in 1958, Tony rose to the rank of second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and went on to gain his master’s degree in education and guidance from Seton Hall.
He served as a teacher, guidance counselor, and head football coach at South Brunswick (N.J.) HS and led the team to a state title. He also earned the Distinguished American Award from the Central Jersey Chapter of the National Football Foundation & Hall of Fame. He continues to be a strong supporter of Delaware football.
