NEW YORK -- The University of Delaware women's indoor track & field team got first place performances from Vicky Caruso, Kelsey Evancho, and Paige Morris (at right), Latoya James set a school record in the 60 meter hurdles, and the Blue Hens posted five other top five finishes to complete a strong showing at the New York Gotham Cup meet at the New York City Armory Friday.
Leading the way once again for the Blue Hens was Caruso, who captured the 400 meters in a career-best time of 55.16, a mark that qualifies her for the ECAC Indoor Championships in Boston in March. Caruso, who has now won 25 career indoor individual and relay titles in her three-year career, also qualified for the ECAC 200 meters last week.
Evancho won her first career title for the Blue Hens as she cleared the heigh of 5-feet, 5-inches to win the women's high jump competition. Also taking home a title for Delaware was Paige Morris, who won the triple jump with a leap of 38-8 3/4, a mark just one inch off the Delaware school record. Morris also placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 17-7 3/4.
Delaware's 4 x 800 meter relay team of Alex Gervais, Alexandra Carroll, Meredith Steenkamer, and Hannah DeMartino placed second with a time of 9:51.52 while the distance medley relay tandem of Lindsay Prettyman, Sydney Shepherd, Emily Gispert, and Jessica Olsen was third in a time of 12:51.20. Carroll also placed eighth in the 500 meters (1:18.3) and Gervais was eighth in the 800 meters (2:21.75).
Placing fourth for the Hens were Gispert in the mile (5:18.30) and Toresha Foster in the high jump (5-3) and finishing fifth for Delaware was Katrina Steenkamer in the 5,000 meters (18:34.37).
James placed seventh in the 60 meter hurdles for the Blue Hens and set a new school record with a time of 8.85. She broke the old mark of 8.88 established by Kayla Hennessy in 2008.
The meet marked the first of five trips by the Blue Hens to the popular indoor track & field venue. Delaware will be in action at three meets next weekend as the Blue Hens will compete at the Albany Great Dane Classic Friday at the Armory, at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday and Saturday, and at the University of Maryland Invitational on Saturday.
