After jumping out to a commanding 7-1 lead through four innings of play, the Gold squad rallied to eventually tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game was called after nine innings due to darkness with the score knotted at nine apiece.
“It was great to see the Gold squad battle back,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said of the Gold squad's effort. “They never gave up even after being down by a large margin early.”
For the Gold squad, redshirt sophomore Zach Lopes went 3-for-4 with one run scored and smashed the game-tying, two-run single with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning that secured the tie. Other offensive standouts for the gold squad were; Chris Branigan, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Gary Jones, who collected 1 double, 3 RBI and 2 walks. Taylor Mahoney allowed one earned run on 3 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in three innings on the mound
For the Blue squad, Brock Niggebrugge collected 2 hits, 2 RBI and 1 run scored, Tyler Dean went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored and Andrew Burgess hammered two doubles with one RBI and a run scored. On the mound for the Blue squad, Kenny Fetchko yielded one earned run on 3 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout in three innings pitched.
“We have a highly competitive group of young men and that was on display today,” Sherman added about his squad that looks to seize a Colonial Athletic Association championship after a runner-up spot in the CAA Tournament last year.
The Blue/Gold World Series will resume on Friday, October with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m at Bob Hannah Stadium as right-hander Danny Gatto is set to start for the Gold Squad while right-hander Matt Soren will take the ball for the Blue squad.
