Roberts Wins Three Events but Hens Fall to George Mason 157-143 (Oct. 13, 2012)

FAIRFAX, Va. -- University of Delaware junior Shea Solt won three freestyle events for the second straight meet to lead the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team to an easy 206-92 Colonial Athletic Association dual meet win over host George Mason Saturday at the McKay Natatorium.
In the men's meet, George Mason captured first place in the final race of the day to secure a 157-143 win over Delaware. Delaware senior Ryan Roberts captured three first place finishes to lead the Blue Hens in defeat.
The Delaware women improved to 2-0 on the year with a second straight one-sided victory after downing Georgetown 223-77 last week in the season opener. The Blue Hen men fell to 1-1 after opening the season with a win over Georgetown last week.
The Blue Hen women, who downed George Mason for the eighth straight time since 2005-06, captured 12 first place finishes led by Solt and freshman Emily Pate with three each. Freshmen Morgan Whyte and diver Kristina Congdon each won two events with Pate sweeping the two breaststroke events for the second straight week.
On the men's side, Roberts, the defending CAA 200 backstroke champion, won three events for the second straight meet as he once again swept the backstroke events. Junior Paul Gallagher also won two events for the Hens.
Solt won the 200 freestyle (1:55.44), 500 freestyle (5:07.34), and 1,000 freestyle (10:25.83) events for the Hens. Pate won both the 100 breaststroke (1:07.32) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.99), Congdon won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, Hailey Farrell won the 400 individual medley (4:37.36), Maggie Tracy won the 100 freestyle (53.66), Whyte won the 50 freestyle in 23.98, the fifth fastest time in UD history, and teamed with Courtney Raw, Pate, and Kaitlin Wolla to capture the 200 medley relay in 1:47.05, and Raw won the 100 backstroke (58.26).
Roberts won the 100 backstroke (50.96) and 200 backstroke (1:50.32) and teamed with Gallagher, Cole Clark, and Clayton Clemens to win the 200 medley relay in 1:34.37. Also for the Hens, Gallagher won the 100 freestyle (46.29), Luke Winkler won the 1-meter diving event (278.55 points), and Ben Evangelista (at right) captured the 100 breaststroke (1:00.46).
Both Delaware teams will take next week off before returning to action Oct. 27 in a home meet vs. Old Dominion at Rawstrom Natatorium.
