Delaware Men Swimmers Fifth After Day 2 of CAA Championships (Feb. 23, 2012)

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The swimming events began at 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at McKay Natatorium at George Mason University with 10 events taking placing during the second night of the four-day competition.
The University of Delaware women broke five program records on the day and currently sit in eighth place in the team standings while the Blue Hen men are in fifth place.
Defending champion UNCW leads the men's field with 221 points followed by host George Mason, Old Dominion, William & Mary, Delaware, Drexel, and Towson. James Madison is atop the women's team standings with 269 points followed by defending champion Towson, UNCW, William & Mary, Old Dominion, George Mason, Northeastern, Delaware, and Drexel.
The competition continues Friday with preliminaries of the 400-yard IM beginning at 10 a.m. The 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, women's one-meter dive, and 200 yard medley and 800 free relays will take place as well. Preliminaries will be held at 10 a.m. with finals set to begin at 6 p.m. The fourth and final day of the meet will be held Saturday.
In the first event of the night, the Delaware 200-yard freestyle relay team of Tori Gillespie, Maggie Tracy, Courtney Raw and Mary Kay Harris finished in fifth place to give the Hens 28 points, while also breaking the school record set two seasons ago.
The Hens' best finish of the night was in the 400-medley relay where the team of Raw, Hannah Facchine, Gillespie and Harris finished third in the race at 3:43.52 while taking down the program record set last year by 1.22 seconds.
Raw also finished in 10th place in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.58 to give the Hens seven points. She broke the previous program mark of 26.63 set by Erinne Butler last season. Gillespie finished 14th in the same event in a time of 23.87. Raw set a second record on the day when she broke her own school record in the 100 backstroke during the first leg of the 400 medley relay. Her time of 55.04 broke her own record of 55.58.
Other top individual finishers for the Delaware women included Stephanie Dodd, who finished in13th place in the 200-yard IM in 2:04.95. During the morning preliminaries, Dodd set the school record with a time of 2:04.08.
On the men's side, the 400-yard medley relay squad of Ryan Roberts, Josh Hyman, Cole Clark and Paul Gallagher enjoyed the top finish of the night for the swimmers, placing third in the event with a time of 3:18.50 and garnering 32 points.
Seth Bergman scored 15 points after placing fourth in the championship final in the one-meter dive with a score of 252.60 while Brian Coonce followed in fifth place with a score of 246.85 and 14 points. Nick Hoffman placed 12th in the consolation final of the same event, posting a score of 200.85.
Clark, Roberts, Gallagher and Nick Woomer teamed up in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish sixth in a time of 1:53.03. Matt McCarthy (at right) was lone swimmer to score in the championship final for the Blue Hen men, placing eight in the 200-yard IM in 1:53.03.
Matthew Marquez placed 11th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.62), Tyler Szarko was 12th in the 200-yard IM (1:52.39), Hyman was 13th in the 200-yard IM (1:52.52), Gallagher placed 13th in the 50-yard freestyle (21.08), and Nick Woomer finished in 17th in the 50 freestyle (21.20)
