NEW YORK -- Redshirt freshman LaToya James (at right) broke her own record in the 60 meter hurdles for the second straight week and the University of Delaware posted two other top 10 finishes as the Blue Hen women's indoor track & field team closed out the first day of the New Balance Invitational at the New York City Armory Friday night.
Delaware will continue action at the meet beginning Saturday morning. Blue Hen track & field athletes will also be competing at the Covert Classic at Lehigh University on Saturday.
James, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, set the school record for the second straight week as she placed fourth in the college 60 meter hurdles competition with a time of 8.60. She broke the mark of 8.78 she set last week when Delaware hosted the Thomson Invitational at Delaware Field House. In addition to her performance in the hurdles, James also placed 57th overall in the 60 meter dash with a clocking of 7.97.
Another big performance was put in by the Blue Hen distance medley relay team of Lindsay Prettyman, Vicky Caruso, Emily Gispert, and Jessica Olsen, which placed seventh overall with a time of 12:03.43. The time was good enough to qualify the team for the ECAC championships to be held in March in Boston.
Delaware's third top 10 finish was put in by freshman Amira Idris, who placed 10th in the long jump with a leap of 18-feet, 6 1/2-inches. She also competed in the 200 meters and placed 41st overall with a time of 25.60.
Also for the Hens, Alexandra Carroll placed 25th in the 500 meters, running to a time of 1:16.85 to break the UD freshman record of 1:17.14 set by Kristi Cox in 2008. In addition, Nijah Dupiche was 45th in the 400 meters (58.32), Toresha Foster was 64th in the 200 meters (26.17), Breanna Nicholson placed 64th in the 400 meters (59.18), Kelley Donovan was 81st in the 400 meters (1:00.49), and Sydney Shepherd was 92nd in the 400 meters (1:01.78).
