NORFOLK, Va. – It's been 11 years since the University of Delaware joined the Colonial Athletic Association in 2001-02. In each of those seasons, the Blue Hen men's tennis team has advanced to the league's tournament quarterfinals.
And 2011-12 would be no different as eighth-seeded Delaware knocked off No. 9 Drexel University 4-1 Thursday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University in the first round of the CAA Tournament.
Delaware (8-8 overall) will now face top-seeded VCU in the quarterfinals on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
The Blue Hens swept the top three and No. 6 singles flights, while Drexel (9-8) picked up one singles victory at No. 4. Due to wet courts, the match was played indoors. Singles were played first and did not require the match to be decided by doubles after the Hens went ahead 4-1.
Troy Beneck captured a point at the top flight for Delaware with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Drexel's Badr Ouabdelmoumen. The victory was Beneck's fourth straight and 30th career singles win.
Adam Lawton followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jeganathan Srinivasan at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, Andre Vorobyov (top right) defeated Skyler Davis 6-4, 7-5.
The No. 4 singles point would go to Drexel as Bryan Nguyen grabbed a 7-6, 6-4 win over Nolan Gelman.
The fifth flight resulted in a no decision while Jason Derene was victorious at the No. 6 spot with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Drexel's Paul Stauskus.
