Blue Hens Collect CAA Series Sweep of George Mason with 3-1 Victory Behind Kuhl?s Arm and Ferdinand?s Bat

FAIRFAX, Va. – Delaware baseball collected a Colonial Athletic Association weekend series sweep over George Mason with a 3-1 victory behind the excellent pitching of starter Chad Kuhl and key base hits by Nick Ferdinand, Sunday afternoon at GMU's Spuhler Field.
Delaware (24-22, 14-10 CAA), which downed the Patriots by scores of 8-6 on Friday and 2-1 Saturday, extended its winning streak to four games and tallied its second CAA road series sweep of the season. Back in late March, the Hens swept James Madison in a three-game series in Harrisonburg, Va.
Ferdinand (at right), DJ Long and EJ Stoltzfus accounted for six of the Blue Hens nine base knocks in the game with two hits apiece. With his two-hit game, Ferdinand extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Kuhl cruised through a season-high eight innings on the mound. The sophomore right-hander held the Patriots to one earned run on seven hits, two walks and eight strikeouts en route to the win. Devon Pearson secured the sweep and his sixth save of the season after the southpaw tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Long reached on a leadoff infield single in the top of the third inning and scored on Ferdinand's double to left field for the game's first run. After Ferdinand advanced to third on a Jimmy Yezzo's fly out, Tyler Powell knocked in Ferdinand on a groundout and gave the Blue Hens a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning after Nick Allen doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on Brig Tison's fly out. Dan Schafferman lined a RBI single through the right side that plated Allen for George Mason's only run.
In the top of the fourth inning, Joe Giacchino reached on an error by George Mason's shortstop, Tison. Brock Niggebrugge dropped a sacrifice bunt that moved Giacchino to second for Hartley, who delivered in the situation by driving in Giacchino with a RBI single, as the Blue Hens reclaimed a two-run advantage, 3-1.
George Mason starter A.J. Johnson (6-5) suffered the hard luck loss for the Patriots after he surrendered three runs (two earned) on eight hits and two strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
The Blue Hens enjoy four days off before returning to the field as the University of Delaware travels to Atlanta to take on the Georgia State Panthers in a three-game CAA weekend series. Game one's first pitch is set for Friday, May 11, at 6 p.m. at GSU's Baseball Complex. The Blue Hens will turn to senior right-hander Eric Young (5-4, 5.22) in the series opener.
