Delaware (23-10, 9-5 CAA) saw its 13-game winning streak end while UNCW improved to 26-10 overall and 9-1 in the conference.
“Tough day overall, UNCW just out pitched and out hit us in addition to playing well defensively,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “If I was told that we would allow only seven runs today, I would have thought we would have split the doubleheader.”
Tied at 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the third inning in the first game, UNCW capitalized on two Blue Hen errors to go along with four singles that resulted in three runs scored and a 4-1 lead.
Solo home runs in the first inning by Jimmy Yezzo and the fourth inning by DJ Long provided the only runs for the Blue Hens in the first game of the doubleheader.
UNCW's Mat Batts (5-2) earned the complete-game win for the Seahawks in game one as the left-hander held the Blue Hens to two earned runs on seven hits and eight strikeouts.
Delaware's Chad Kuhl (5-2) suffered the loss in game one after the right-hander was charged with four runs (three earned) on 11 hits and five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
UNCW scored all of its runs again in the third inning of game two of the doubleheader. Back-to-back singles followed by a RBI single that was compounded by a fielding error in right field by Nick Ferdinand resulted in the batter reaching third base on the play. A final RBI single capped the three-run frame and provided the Seahawks all the runs needed in the win.
EJ Stoltzfus tallied UD's only runs of the second game in the top of the ninth inning after he hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field wall.
Yezzo's on-base streak was snapped in the second game of the doubleheader with an 0-for-4 day at the plate.
Jordan Ramsey (6-2) secured the victory for UNCW as the righty allowed two earned runs on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched.
Secrest (S, 4) earned his fourth save of the season after he retired the only batter he faced that ended the game.
Delaware's Adam Davis (4-4) yielded three runs (two earned) on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings on the mound for his fourth loss of the year.
The Blue Hens and Seahawks complete their CAA weekend series on Sunday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m. at UNCW's Brooks Field.
Delaware turns to right-hander Matt Soren (2-1, 1.69 earned-run average) while UNCW hands the ball to left-hander Christian McDonald (4-0, 2.91 ERA).
“We need a big effort out of Soren tomorrow and swing the bats better to be able to take home a victory,” said Sherman.
