NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware's baseball team concludes fall practice this weekend with the Blue Hen World Series and the Blue Team defeated the Black Team 13-5 in game one of the series Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Team, captained by seniors Adam Davis and Zach Lopes, had 16 hits in the winning effort and used a big first inning to propel themselves to the victory.
Jim ShermanChad Martin started the game for Black and allowed one earned run in the first before committing an error with two outs that allowed three unearned runs to score and the Blue team never looked back.
Davis turned in a solid start for the Blue Team as the righty went four innings, struck out four, and only allowed one run. Matt Hornich had a quality relief appearance as he only allowed two runs in three innings pitched.
Although both offenses lit up the scoreboard, both starting pitchers showed what they are capable of.
"Adam Davis threw well today and that is what we expect from him every time he toes the rubber,” said Sherman. “Chad Martin had good stuff but was unlucky early in the game. I was proud of how he buckled down and finished his outing though. If those two guys can be consistent for us week in and week out, we will definitely be a tough ball club.”
Offensively, the Blue Team was led by Diaz Nardo, who registered two hits including a mammoth home run into the wind in left center. Catcher Ty Warrington had three hits and launched a home run over the Blue Monster in left field. The senior also collected three RBI on the day. The Blue Team registered seven extra-base hits in the winning effort.
The Black Team tallied 11 hits, five of which were extra-base knocks, in the 13-5 loss. Ryan Hartley led the offensive output with three hits including one double and a triple. Mike Krusinski also stood out at the plate as the freshman added two hits, including a triple.
Game two of the Blue Hen World Series will continue tomorrow with first pitch at 11 a.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium. Saturday's starting pitchers will be Ron Marinaccio for the Blue squad and Burk FitzPatrick for the Black squad. All fans planning on coming to the game tomorrow should park in front of Delaware Stadium and walk through the wrought iron gates down to Bob Hannah Stadium.
