HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Fairleigh Dickinson trailed the University of Delaware by eight points with 3:04 remaining but scored the final 10 points of the contest to pull out a 76-74 men's basketball victory over the Blue Hens Saturday afternoon at Stratis Arena.
Delaware, which dropped to 0-9 on the season, looked to have the game in hand when Barnett Harris hit two free throws to make it a 74-66 game with 3:04 on the clock, but the Blue Hens would not score again. Earl Potts Jr. drained a three-pointer for the Knights (4-5), and after Malachi Nix added a layup, Potts Jr. delivered a dunk to cut the margin to one with 1:27 left.
Following an empty possession for Delaware, Potts Jr. was fouled and hit the ensuing two free throws to put FDU in front. UD point guard Anthony Mosley then missed a layup, but after UD retained possession, Chivarsky Corbett's inbounds pass intended for Marvin King-Davis in the lane with 4.2 seconds left was intercepted. FDU's Darian Anderson was fouled and hit one free throw at the other end, while the Blue Hens could not get off a last-second desperation shot.
“We played good defense today, but you can't turn the ball over 22 times and miss 10 free throws and expect to win at this level,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We weren't good enough today to win the game, and we have to be better. We have done a good job of taking care of the ball this season, but unfortunately we weren't able to do that today.”
Delaware sophomore Cazmon Hayes scored a game-high 21 points for the Blue Hens, knocking down 8 of 12 shots from the field including four triples. Kyle Anderson added 17 points and is now just three points shy of 1,000 for his career, while Corbett chipped in with 13 points and connected on all three of his shots from behind the arc. Mosley, making his first career start, dished out a career-high seven assists for UD.
The Blue Hens played without freshman point guard Kory Holden who injured his hamstring during Thursday's game vs. Temple, while Maurice Jeffers sat out the second half after taking an elbow to his right eye.
Darian Anderson led FDU with 16 points, while Potts Jr. added 14 and Matt MacDonald contributed 13 points for the Knights.
In a game that was tied nine times and featured 17 lead changes, Delaware took a 38-36 halftime advantage after Mosley scored in the final minute of the period.
The Blue Hens were down a point with 5:35 left but Hayes drained a three-pointer to ignite a 9-0 Delaware run, culminating with the two Harris free throws that put UD up eight. However FDU answered with the final 10 points of the contest to pull out the victory.
Delaware will face its second consecutive Northeast Conference opponent on Monday when the Blue Hens head to Robert Morris for a 7 p.m. game with the Colonials.
