GREENSBORO, N.C. – At the 2014 USA Swimming Long Course Time Trials Sunday, 10 University of Delaware swimmers competed in a long course pool that allowed for qualification into future meets like the 2016 Olympic Trials that only permit times achieved in a long course pool.
Morgan Whyte came the closest to recording a qualifying time as the junior swam in the 50 freestyle in 26.45. Whyte's time was good for a third place finish and missed out on a qualifying time by .26 seconds.
Dominique Montoya competed in the 50 freestyle and earned a 10th place finish with a time of 27.00. Montoya also participated in the 100 freestyle and finished in eighth with a time of 58.58.
Annie Nunes registered a 14th place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.49, while Alyssa Sanders swam the 100 backstroke in 1:04.69 and earned a 12 place finish.
On the men's side, Alex Tooley and Patrick Savidge swam in the 400 IM event. Tooley landed a second place finish with a time of 4:35.98, while Savidge swam the event in 4:46.73, which was good for third place.
Tim Ware, Greg Neidlinger, and Alex Hillsley each competed in the 100 backstroke event. Ware had the best result as the senior finished seventh with a time of 59.29. Neidlinger swam the race in 1:00.58, which earned him 10th place, while Hillsley finished 13th with a time of 1:03.05.
Cory Camp was the sixth and final men's swimmer to compete as the sophomore swam in the 200 backstroke. Camp swam the race in 2:13.12, which was good for an eighth place finish.
In an omission from our recap of Friday's events, Nunes swam in the women's 100 breaststroke race and finished in 44th place with a time of 2:18.59. The sophomore's performance was the third fastest in school history and the fastest by a UD women's swimmer this season.
John Hayman“Ware and Whyte were our first ever qualifiers for finals in this meet. Both finished 19th and Tim established a new school record with his performance in the 100 backstroke. This meet gets faster every year and we have continued to increase our number of qualifiers as such. Competing at meets of this caliber better prepare us for our conference championships and our ultimate goal of NCAA's.”
Delaware will now be off for over a month as the Blue Hens go on a hiatus for the holidays. UD's next meet will come on Jan. 10 when the men will swim against Drexel, while the women will participate in a dual meet with the Dragons and Northeastern. The meet will take place at Drexel's Daskalakis Athletic Center.
