Cheng, Jeffray, Renzi Tally Wins as Blue Hens Men's Tennis Opens Season at SJU Invite

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Delaware men's tennis team opened the 2014 fall season Friday afternoon with three singles victories at the Saint Joseph's Invitational.
In top flight singles, freshman Matt Renzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) came up with a strong, 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Army's Michael Sienko to advance to Round of 16 play against Chris Seitz (Villanova) Saturday at noon.
Classmate Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall Township) also recorded his first career victory as the newcomer battled for a 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 victory against Lafayette's Jake Lazer in No. 3 singles. Jeffray will take on Villanova's Justin Burrus Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
In fourth flight action, sophomore Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary School) defeated Max Shanbrom (Loyola), 7-6 (3), 6-3. Cheng will face a Villanova opponent in Luis Miranda at noon Saturday.
“We got off to a slow start with an uncharacteristic doubles loss, but the guys really turned it around as the day went on. The freshmen came out with big wins and it's great to see them breaking into the collegiate scene with 'Ws.'”
Alex Sweet (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) join junior Tim Puterio (Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) and freshman Henry Tell (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) hit the court for the first time Saturday after first round singles byes.
