PHILADELPHIA – Junior Tim Puterio (Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) began his season strong Saturday as the University of Delaware men's tennis team continued play in the Saint Joseph's Invitational.
Puterio continued a winning streak from last season, which has now reached five matches after two singles victories Saturday. In No. 2 singles, Puterio pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Villanova's Mike Rosengren before defeating Drexel's Alex Fioravante, 6-2, 6-2. In tomorrow's semifinals match, Puterio will face Peter Sienko from Army beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Freshman Henry Tell (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) earned his first career win Saturday with a 6-1, 7-6 (11) victory against SJU's David Pagliarulo. Tell's day then ended with a loss to William Szamosszegi (Bucknell), 6-1, 6-2.
In No. 2 doubles play, sophomore Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary School) and freshman Colin Wong (Jalan Anggerik Eria, Malaysia) paired for a tough 9-7 win over Loyola's Matt Bejian and Max Shanbrom.
The duo begin quarterfinals action Sunday at 8:30 a.m. against Villanova's Justin Burrus and Matt Phelps.
“Several matches today could have gone our way, but we didn't capitalize on key opportunities. This is something that we will remedy going forward. Tim [Puterio] really stepped up today and showed why he is such a reliable member of our team.”
Chris Hincker is in his first season at the helm of the Blue Hens.
