NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's soccer team opened its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a 4-1 home victory over UNCW Friday.
The Blue Hens (5-5, CAA 1-0) had their highest scoring total of the season and tallied the most goals in a game since a 4-0 victory over UNCW in 2011.
Scott GrzendaEmily Market put the Blue Hens on the board at the 18:07 mark of the first half. Market cashed in on a cross-field pass from Andrea Arnold to give UD the early lead.
Minutes later, Nikki Adams scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season and gave Delaware a commanding 2-0 first half lead.
UNCW (5-4-1, CAA 0-1) was able to score one goal before halftime, but the Blue Hens reasserted their dominance in the second half.
UD spent most of the second 45 minutes in the offensive zone and Arnold and Madison Brosler were both able to score to give Delaware the 4-1 victory.
“The offense was really incredible tonight,” said Market. “We really finished well in this game. The whole team was on the same page and clicking on all cylinders. It is great to come out and play well in these important CAA games.”
Natalie Zelenky led Delaware with five shots on the night, while four different Blue Hens accounted for one assist each in the winning effort.
Katrina Guillou was one of the few bright spots in the UNCW losing effort. Guillou had two shots and was responsible for the lone Seahawk goal.
Delaware outshot UNCW 17-12 and have outshot or equaled the shot total of their opponents in every game this season.
The Blue Hens are now 6-4 in their last 10 conference openers and will look to go 2-0 in CAA play this Sunday as UD hosts College of Charleston at 1 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
