Olkkola, a member of the Delaware staff since 2010, will now serve in the role of Senior Associate AD for Finance and Administration while Shirley will now serve as Senior Associate AD for Facilities, Operations, and Sports Performance.
Olkkola will oversee the business operations areas, serve as the department's human resources representative, and continue to oversee the recreation, ice arenas, and outdoor pool areas. His current role in recreation at the Carpenter Sports Building will be filled in the coming weeks.
Shirley's role will be expanded to also include oversight of sports performance areas such as equipment operations, strength & conditioning, athletic training, and sports medicine.
“First, I want to congratulate Augie on this tremendous and well-deserved opportunity,” said Ziady. “This move allows him to pursue his long-term career goals while still remaining a part of the UD family. He has been a valuable asset to this department and to me and I am thrilled that he will still play an important role in athletics in the future as part of this new position.
“In addition, Joe and Jake have served the University admirably and I am confident that our great staffs in both business operations and sports performance will thrive in this new restructured organization,” Ziady continued.
A 1997 mechanical engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Maurelli earned his MBA in finance from Georgetown University in 2002. He served for seven years at Georgetown in the areas on strength, conditioning, and student-athlete performance before coming to Delaware in 2010.
Since arriving in Newark, Maurelli has served in the roles of assistant athletics director for strength and conditioning, associate athletics director for student-athlete performance, associate athletics director for financial strategies and athlete performance, and senior associate athletics director for business operations.
Prior to his work in college athletics, Maurelli worked for three years in project finance for Johnson Controls (Baltimore, Md.), two years as an associate for Goldman Sachs (New York, N.Y.), and one year as a senior analyst with MCG Capital – RIC/BDC (Washington, D.C.).
“I am incredibly grateful for my time here in athletics and will greatly miss our athletes, coaches, and my staff,” said Maurelli. “The ability to remain at UD and continue to contribute to our mission and values makes this opportunity that much more exciting. I would be remiss to not recognize Eric Ziady and our senior staff for all of their leadership during my time in athletics and I would like to thank all my team members for their hard work and dedication. Go Hens!”
Olkkola, who came to Delaware in 2010 after previously serving as director of recreational services at Harvard University, has over nine years of significant financial management experience that has resulted in major capital and programmatic improvements at both Delaware and Harvard.
As associate athletics director for recreation services at UD, he recently oversaw the $25 million renovation and construction of the 45,000-square-foot addition to the Carpenter Sports Building that was dedicated on August, 2013. He earned his degree in sport management from Southern New Hampshire University in 2000.
Shirley joined UD Athletics in the new role of senior associate athletics director for facilities, operations, and capital projects in April, 2013 and has been at the forefront of numerous facility upgrades and renovations since his arrival, including major renovations to Bob Hannah Stadium (baseball), Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium (soccer and track & field), Delaware Field House, and soccer practice fields over the last 12 months.
A 1994 graduate of Northeastern University, he previously served on the athletics staffs at both Northeastern University and Boston College.
