Delaware Posts Seven Top 10 Finishes at Gotham Cup Meet

NEW YORK -- The University of Delaware women's indoor track & field team posted seven top 10 finishes, including two by junior Latazah Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del.), to highlight competition Friday night at the Gotham Cup Classic the New York City Armory.
The meet, which featured some of the top intercollegiate and club teams in the region, was Delaware's second competition of the indoor season.
“Overall we had a good day,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “The ladies represented well. As we progress in the season, we look to have more athletes qualifying for the ECAC Championship in March.”
Coleman, a first-year transfer from Rider, posted a seventh place finish in the 200 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 24.85 and followed with a ninth place showing in the 200 meters with a clocking of 7.66.
Freshman Tyra Reid (Caesar Rodney/Dover, Del.) also qualified for the ECAC meet in March with an eighth place showing in the 200 meters (24.94) while senior Haley Gorenflo (Plymouth-Whitemarsh/Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) had an ECAC qualifying leap of 11-9 3/4 in the pole vault to finish ninth.
Also for the Hens, the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Liz McGroarty (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, Pa.), Angie Spadaccini (Padua/Wilmington, Del.), Melissa Mazzo (Thomas/Webster, Conn.), and Erin McCloskey (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, Md.) was a team-best fifth in 9:33.36, LaToya James (Convent of Mercy/Kingston, Jamaica) was seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (8.77), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kelley Donovan (Hempfield/Lancaster, Pa.), Breanna Nicholson (North Brunswick/North Brunswick, N.J.), Alexandra Carroll (Damascus/Damascus, Md.), and Carolyn Darr (Penns Valley Area/Centre Hall, Pa.) placed 10th in 3:58.92.
Mazzo was the team's top distance finisher as she placed 13th in the mile run with a time of 5:13.06.
Delaware will continue action Saturday, Jan. 17, when the team competes at the Maryland Invitational at the Prince George's (Md.) Track Complex.
