NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball squad came out cold, trailed by 12 points at halftime, and could never make up the margin in the second half as the Blue Hens dropped a 66-62 Colonial Athletic Association verdict to rival Drexel Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (4-13, 2-4 CAA) shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half (7 of 23) and just
41.2 percent for the game (21 of 51) and had a two-game win streak snapped. Delaware hit just 4 of 19 three-point attempts and struggled at the line, converting 16 of 25 attempts.
Delaware freshman guard Chivarsky Corbett came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points and pull six rebounds to lead the Hens while sophomore guard Cazmon Hayes (below right) added 10 points and freshman guard Kory Holden had seven points and six assists. Hayes scored in double figures for the third straight game.
Marvin King-Davis (at left) added eight points and six rebounds while Maurice Jeffers contributed eight points and five boards.
“I thought the biggest part of the game was how badly we started,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We're not a great offensive team, so when we fall that far behind, it makes it tough for us to come back. We ran good offense and got to the foul line, but it you don't make them pay, it's all for naught. We just didn't play well enough in a lot of areas today."
Delaware entered the break down 35-23 and trailed by at least six points the entire second half until the final five minutes when a comeback attempt fell short. The Hens cut the Drexel lead to 63-60 on a
Corbett three-pointer with 1:13 left and narrowed the gap to 64-62 with 29 seconds left on a layup by Holden, but Drexel's Freddie Wilson and Mohamed Bah each converted a free throw in the final 22 seconds to preserve the win.
The Hens had the chance to cut the lead to a single point but Holden missed a layup with 13 seconds remaining.
Drexel (4-13, 2-4 CAA), which had a two-game losing streak snapped, got 17 points and 11 rebounds from guard Damion Lee while Tavon Allen added 13 points and Tyshawn Myles came off the bench to notch career-highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Dragons knocked down 17 of 21 free throws with Lee going a perfect 10 for 10 from the charity stripe.
