HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Hofstra University men's basketball team put four players in double figures as the Pride defeated the University of Delaware, 71-58, in CAA action Monday night at the Mack Sports Complex.
Hofstra, which won its fourth consecutive game, improved to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in league play. Delaware, which dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the conference, has opened CAA play with two straight losses for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
Juan'ya Green scored 16 points to lead the Pride, while Ameen Tanksley added 15 points and nine rebounds. Brian Bernardi chipped in 13 points for Hofstra, while Rokas Gustys notched a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
Kyle Anderson paced the Blue Hens with 16 points and hit three triples as he became Delaware's career leader in three-pointers made. Anderson, who went 6 of 13 from the field and handed out three assists, has now reached double figures in all six games in which he has appeared this year. Freshman Chivarsky Corbett added 11 points and six boards for UD, while classmate Kory Holden contributed 10 points and a season-high seven boards.
Delaware shot just 37.9 percent from the field, and the Blue Hens were 5 of 18 from three-point range. Hofstra wasn't much better, as the Pride shot only 40.8 percent from floor including 5 of 23 from deep. However Hofstra held a 48-33 rebounding advantage and forced 16 Blue Hen turnovers.
“In the first half we didn't take care of the ball well, and although our defensive effort was decent all night, we gave up too many offensive rebounds,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We played much better than we did Saturday, we just have to keep improving. But it's difficult to win on the road when you commit that many turnovers.”
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 15-8 advantage but then went 1 of 12 from the field, as the Pride scored the next 15 points and eventually went up 25-17 with 3:48 on the clock. Anderson answered with a layup and a three-pointer to bring Delaware within three, before the Pride's Malik Nichols scored in the final minute to give Hofstra a 27-22 halftime cushion.
Hofstra eventually pushed its lead to 44-29 with 15 minutes remaining, before an Anderson three-pointer and a Holden jumper brought Delaware within 10 at the 13:52 mark. However the Pride scored the next five points and led by double figures the rest of the way.
The Blue Hens are back on the road on Thursday with a 7 p.m. game against UNCW at Trask Coliseum.
