ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of Delaware will be one of six teams battling for the team title today when the Blue Hen women's indoor track & field team opens the 2015 season at the Navy Invitational at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
The event, which kicks off at 4 p.m. and will include competition in 16 events, will include host Navy, Delaware, Holy Cross, James Madison, UMES, and Mt. St. Mary's. Delaware will take a team of approximately 40 student-athletes and will participate in 15 of the 16 events.
The Blue Hens' top performers are expected to be defending ECAC indoor hurdles champion in senior LaToya James, senior CAA champion long jumper Amira Idris, senior high jumper Kelsey Evancho, senior pole vaulter Haley Gorenflo, senior weight thrower Monica Hagenauer, senior middle distance runners Kelley Donovan, Alexandra Carroll, and Breanna Nicholson, and senior Melissa Mazzo in the mile.
Among the top newcomers are sprinters Latazah Coleman and Tyra Reid and shot putter Sarah Hillman.
“I am excited for the start of our season,” said Delaware's seventh-year head coach Wendy McFarlane, who led the Blue Hens to the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor team title last May. “A dual with not just our conference opponent JMU, but with other standout programs at our level, is a great way to start the season. The first meet is always a good indicator as to how the season will unfold. The athletes are ready to get quality performances as we prepare for the bigger meets ahead. Our goals are set toward the ECAC Championship indoors and the CAA championship in the spring.”
Following Navy, Delaware will also compete Jan. 16 at the Gotham Cup in New York City; Jan. 17 at the Maryland Invitational at Prince George's, Md.; Jan. 24 at the Tiger Open at Princeton; Jan. 30-31 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational at New York City; Jan. 31 at the John Covert Classic at Lehigh; Feb. 7 at the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus; Feb. 21 at the Princeton Invitational; Mar. 1 at the George Mason Last Chance Meet; and Mar. 7-8 at the ECAC Championships at Boston University.
