UD Spirit Teams Preparing for Nationals; Send-Off Performance Set for Jan. 12 at CSB

NEWARK, Del. -- The nationally-recognized University of Delaware Spirit Teams will be competing on the national stage later this month when the Blue Hen cheerleading, dance, and mascot teams take part in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) and Universal Dance Association (UDA) Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championships at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Jan. 16-18.
Prior to the national championships, the UD Spirit Teams will take part in a National Send Off Performance on Monday, January 12. at 6 p.m. at the Carpenter Sports Building on campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship is the most prestigious college cheerleading championship in the country.
Delaware, led by cheerleading head coach Rob Ellery, cheerleading assistant coach Gillian Guadagnino, dance team head coach Nicole Zehnder, and mascot head coach Chad Mills, will compete in five events at the national championships during the busy weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 16, YoUDee will compete in the mascot competition while Aston Dommel and Jacqueline Fabricatore will compete in the co-ed partner stunt competition and Nicole Chinn, Angela Trozzi, Isabel Debnam, and Jenna Krasely will take part in the all-girl partner stunt competition. YouDee, who was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006, has won five national titles as best mascot in 2002, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013 and has competed at nationals every year since 1999.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, Delaware's defending national champion co-ed team will compete in the Division I finals.
The Delaware Dance Team will compete in both the Jazz and Hip Hop divisions on Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Hens won the national title in the Hip Hop category in 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011.
