ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of Delaware women's indoor track & field team enjoyed a successful start to the 2015 season Thursday evening as the Blue Hens won five events and placed second in the team standings at the Navy Invitational at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
The Blue Hens got a big effort from a pair of newcomers as junior transfer Latazah Coleman won the 200 meters (24.87) and placed second in the high jump while freshman Sarah Hillman won the shot put (43-3 3/4). Coleman's time in the 200 meters was the fourth best in UD history and an ECAC qualifying time while Hillman's throw was the fifth best in UD annals and third best by a freshman.
Host Navy won the team title with 164 points, edging Delaware which had 150 points. UMES was third with 121 points followed by James Madison, Mt. St. Mary's, and Holy
Cross.
“This was a very nice start and team effort from the group,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “We had some solid performances today. To be the best we have to beat the best, so we have some work to do to get better performances as the season progresses. I was proud to have two ECAC qualifying performances and some top place finishers coming off the long holiday break. This just shows that the ladies had put in the work and they are ready to take on this season's challenges.”
Delaware also got first place finishes from LaToya James in the 60 meter hurdles (8.69), Monica Hagenauer in the weight throw (50-5 1/4), and Kelley Donovan in the 500 meters (1:17.89). James, the defending ECAC 60 meter hurdles champion, qualified for this year's ECAC championships with her time.
The Hens also recorded seven second place finishes highlighted by freshman Tyra Reid, who posted the second best time by a UD freshman in the 200 meters with a clocking of 25.24 while also running a leg of the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:01.80). Amira Idris was second in the long jump (17-8), Melissa Mazzo was second in the mile (5:13.41), Becky Gessler was second in the 3,000 meters (10:30.99), and the distance medley relay team was runner-up in a time of 12:29.33.
Delaware will return to action next Friday, Jan. 16 at the Gotham Cup at the New York City Armory.
