NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware scored two goals just 84 seconds apart in the first half to take control and cruised to a key 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer victory over Elon Friday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware junior Natalie Zelenky (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg, Pa./below right) continued to score at an impressive rate as she tallied twice and freshman Riley Curtin (Hershey/Hershey, Pa.) added a goal as well as the Blue Hens won their second straight game and kept their CAA Tournament hopes alive.
The three goals was the most scored by the Blue Hens (7-6-2, 2-2-2 CAA) in conference play this
season and the highest total since a 3-1 victory over George Washington back on Sept. 13.
Zelenky, who scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win over Drexel last Sunday, tallied multiple goals for the fourth time this season and for the fifth time in her career. Her 11 goals is tied for the CAA lead and is the most by a Delaware player since Ali Miller tallied 11 goals during the 2011 season.
The Hens jumped out to a 1-0 lead 13:57 into the game when Zelenky took a pass from Emily Market (Villa Joseph Marie/Holland, Pa.) off a corner kick, turned, and fired a left-footed shot past Elon goalkeeper Taylor Mohr for her first goals. It didn't take the Hens long to make it 2-0 as just 84 seconds laster Curtin scored off a deflection from eight yards out at the 15:31 mark.
"It was really good to put one away on the corner because we've been practicing that all week,” said Zelenky. “Our offense has been coming along really well up top. It was good to get a result.”
Delaware added some insurance in the second half when Zelenky took a long pass from Nikki Adams (Schalick/Pittsgrove, N.J.) down the right sideline and fired a shot from 20 yards out into the left corner of the goal.
Blue Hen sophomore goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos (Groton Dunstable/Groton, Mass.) was tough in the nets as she made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
“She's just a beast,” said Grzenda of Rekos. “She is probably one of the better goalkeepers in the CAA and I think she's really finding her own. After she went out with a concussion a few weeks back, I think she has focused a little bit more.”
