Scott Grzenda. “They knocked the ball around as good, if not better, than any other team we played but I thought we played a really good game. We had that one little breakdown in the second half where they got the two goals pretty quick. But besides that, we stuck to our game plan, we marked, we went forward, and I thought we did the things that we needed to do. I don't think our team has any regrets, they came out hard and played for each other.”Delaware (7-7-2, 2-3-2 Colonial Athletic Association), which had a two-game winning streak snapped, remained in strong contention for one of six spots in the upcoming CAA Tournament as the Blue Hens currently stand in sixth place, one point ahead of College of Charleston, with two games left to play.
William & Mary (11-3-1, 5-1 CAA), which won its fifth straight game and its eighth in the last 10 outings, outshot the Hens 11-5 but Delaware held a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks. The Tribe entered
the game leading the CAA in scoring defense at 0.63 goals allowed per game and posted their ninth shutout of the campaign. Delaware's Natalie Zelenky had two strong attempts at goals but was thwarted both times by William & Mary goalkeeper Caroline Casey, who recorded three saves for the shutout. Delaware's Kailyn Rekos made three stops in goal for the Blue Hens.
The Blue Hens honored their five seniors and those player's parents in a pregame ceremony on the field. The group includes goalkeeper Kelsey O'Donnell, midfielders Emily Market (top left), Alison Slark, and Elise Krause, and defender Maddy Parker (top right). That group has led Delaware to 32 victories and two CAA Tournament appearances over the last four seasons.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware will close out the regular season next weekend with CAA games at Hofstra (Oct. 23) and Northeastern (Oct. 25)
• Delaware still clinched a winning home record for the fifth straight year as the Hens went 5-3-1 at Grant Stadium this fall
• William & Mary downed the Hens for the third straight time and now leads the series with Delaware 12-2-3 but the Tribe posted their first win over Delaware in Newark in its last three visits
