NEWARK, Del. – It all came down to a penalty stroke in the 75th minute Sunday afternoon at Fred P. Rullo Stadium as No. 15 Delaware battled No. 5 Virginia, but came up short in a 3-2 decision.
Junior Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) gave the Blue Hens (11-4) the 2-1 advantage in the 64th minute off a penalty corner with assists from freshman
Kiki Bink (Wageningen, The Netherlands/RSG Pantarijn) and senior Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus).
The Cavaliers (12-3) would not concede, however, as Greta Ell posted the equalizer just five minutes later. Tara Vittese then posted the game-winner with 74:11 on the clock off a penalty stroke for UVA.
Junior Kayla Devlin (at left; Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) was also credited with a goal for the Blue Hens in the fifth minute while freshman Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltkeplatz) earned the assist.
Sophomore goalie Emmeline Oltmans (below right; Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) logged seven saves while Mikelson and junior Maura Zarkoski (Eagleville, Pa./Villa Maria) each picked up defensive saves.
Vittese led Virginia with a goal and assist while Rebecca Holden notched four saves in 39 minutes for the Cavaliers.
“Win or loss, today doesn't define what we did for 75 minutes. I'm very proud of my players. Everything we asked for the entire week, they did it, and today they came out and fought. They were first class in representing themselves, our program and the University of Delaware. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best and UVA is one of the best
programs in the country. We dominated from time to time and we were able to answer the way they played us. We have to build from today; this was our best performance of the year. The foundation we put into place today is going to be great moving forward.”HEN SCRATCHINGS
