Budde, Coonce Join Delaware Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Coaching Staff

Budde (pronounced "buddy") joins the Blue Hens staff after serving most recently as head coach and aquatics director at NCAA Division III member Greensboro (N.C.) for seven seasons between 2007-14. He is the winningest coach in Greensboro College history.
He also served as assistant coach at George Mason University in 2004-07, was aquatics director at the Gilman School in Baltimore in 2000-04, and served as interim water polo coach at Maryland in 2003-04.
While at Greensboro, he coached an NCAA championship qualifier, an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year, and was named Atlantic State Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. He has also served as a swim club coach for several programs, most recently with the Suburban Seahawks Club (Newtown Square, Pa.) in 2014-15.
Budde, who earned his degree in biology from the University of Maryland in 1999, was a high school All-American and Pennsylvania state runner-up in the 200 and 500 freestyle events while at Cumberland Valley High School before continuing his career at Maryland.
While at Maryland, he served as team captain for two seasons and set the school record in the 1,650 freestyle. He was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and earned Maryland's Diehl Award for dedication twice.
He and his wife, Dr. Melissa Adams-Budde, reside in West Chester, Pa. with their two sons, Klete and Brody. Melissa is a professor at West Chester University.
Coonce, a native of Yorktown, Va., was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Delaware as a diver in 2010-13 and earned his degree in history with a minor in educational studies in 2013 from Delaware.
During his career at Delaware, Coonce (at right) posted five Top 10 finishes at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships as a senior in 2013.
He placed third in the CAA three-meter diving event as a senior in 2013, was third in the three-meter and fifth in the one-meter as a junior in 2012, and placed sixth in the three-meter and 10th in the one-meter at the 2011 CAA championships as a sophomore.
As a senior in 2013, he was selected as the winner of the team's Diver of the Year Award. He also was named the CAA Diver of the Week five times during his career.
Coonce has an extensive background in coaching youth divers, having served as diving coach at the Donaldson Run Recreation Association in Arlington, Va. (2006-12), the Dominion Dive Club in Vienna, Va. (2007-09), the Infinity Dive Club in Newark, Del. (2010-13), and as head diving coach at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Va. (2014-15).
He is single and resides in Newark, Del.
