RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware was the big winner Wednesday as the Colonial Athletic Association handed out its weekly men's and women's swimmer and diver of the week awards for the week ending Oct. 26.
The Blue Hens had four student-athletes honored as junior Alex Hillsley was named Male Swimmer of the Week, senior Luke Winkler was named Male Diver of the Week, senior Kristina Congdon was selected as Female Diver of the Week, and senior Morgan Whyte shared the Female Swimmer of the Week award with Drexel's Rachel Bernhardt.
Delaware enjoyed a successful weekend as the Blue Hens swept George Mason in a dual meet at Rawstrom Pool Saturday afternoon. The UD women (3-0) defeated George Mason 186-109 while the Blue Hen men toppled the Patriots by a 157-137 score, winning the meet on the final relay of the day.
Congdon won the award for the fourth time in her career while it was the second career citation for both Whyte and Winkler.
Hillsley (State College Area HS/Port Matilda, Pa.) won three individual events over the weekend vs. George Mason. In the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, he swam in 51.69 and 1:51.42, respectively, while the time in the 200 backstroke currently ranks second in the CAA so far this season. Hillsley also claimed first place in the 200 individual medley with a solid time of 1:53.50 - which also ranks second among CAA competitors thus far in 2015.
Winkler (St. John's College/Bethesda, Md.) swept the diving competition, capturing the 1-meter board with a score of 272.85 and the 3-meter with a score of 330.52.
Whyte (St. John's College HS/Chevy Chase, Md.), the defending CAA champion in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, shined over the weekend as the senior cruised in the 50 freestyle (23.71) and equally impressed in the 100 freestyle (51.96). Both of those times currently rank second this season in the CAA behind William & Mary's Jaimie Miller.
Congdon (Pennsbury/Yardley, Pa.) won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. She registered a score of 270.82 on the 1-meter and 295.65 on the 3-meter.
Delaware will take part in one of its biggest meets of the year this weekend as the Blue Hens host a CAA Pod Meet that will also include James Madison, William & Mary, and UNCW. William & Mary is the defending CAA men's champion.
The action begins Saturday at 10 a.m. and continues into the evening. Sunday's action will also get underway at 10 a.m.
