Ian Hennessy. “The early goals killed us even though we pressed hard in the second half. We are very proud of the commitment from our players. Congratulations to Hofstra on a well-deserved win.“If you would have told me before the season that we would be standing here, I would have said that was a bonus, especially since we had five players who had never played college soccer before,” Hennessy continued. “This is really a staggering achievement for this group and we are very proud of them.”
For Delaware, senior Joe Dipre (Betchworth, England), junior Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France), and sophomore Thibault Philippe (Saint Brienc, France) each earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Dipre led the Hens with four shots but the Pride held Delaware All-American and leading scorer Guillermo Delgado to a single shot.
Hofstra outshot Delaware 18-10 for the game but had a commanding 14-2 advantage in the first half as the Pride took 13 shots before the Blue Hens even had their first. The Pride got all the offense they would need 25:23 into the game when Nino Alfonso scored his first goal of the season off a feed from Rory Murphy.
The second goal was an improbable one. After the first half horn sounded, officials put two more seconds on the board due to a Delaware foul. Holland was granted a free kick from the left side and curled his shot around Delaware goalkeeper Todd Morton (four saves) and into the net as the half ended.
Delaware outshot Hofstra 8-4 in the second half but neither team generated many good chances as Hofstra held on for the victory.
