RICHMOND, Va. -- For the second straight week, University of Delaware seniors Morgan Whyte and Luke Winkler have been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association for their outstanding efforts in the pool.
Whyte, a fashion merchandising major from Chevy Chase, Md., was named the CAA Women's Swimmer of the Week for the second straight week while Winkler, a fine arts major from Bethesda, Md., was selected as the CAA Men's Diver of Week for the second straight time. Both are graduates of St. John's College High School.
Both put in outstanding performances last week as Delaware hosted a UNCW, William & Mary, and James Madison in a CAA Pod Meet at Rawstrom Natatorium. The UD women (5-1) defeated UNCW and William & Mary and fell to James Madison while the Blue Hen men (3-1) defeated UNCW and dropped a decision to William & Mary.
Whyte won four events and posted one third place finish to lead the Blue Hens. She touched the wall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.71 - good for first place - and that time still ranks second among CAA competitors so far this season for the event. In the 100-yard freestyle, she won first with a blazing time of 51.42, which now leads the CAA this season. She also teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.07) and 400 freestyle relay (Rawstrom Pool record time of 3:27.99), and was third in the 200 medley relay (1:46.96). So far this season has posted nine dual meet victories.
Winkler continued his early season success as he swept both the one-meter and three-meter diving events for the second straight meet. He won the one-meter competition with a score of 291.30 and took first place in the three-meter with a tally of 294.55 points. Winkler, who has now won three CAA Diver of the Week awards in his career, has won five of six dual diving competitions this season.
In addition to Whyte and Winkler, the CAA also recognized Jeremiah O'Donnell of William & Mary as Men's Swimmer of the Week, Towson's Ashley Illenye was Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week, and Drexel's Madison Kramer as Women's Diver of the Week.
