POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Cazmon Hayes scored on a leaner in the paint with 27 seconds remaining to cap a furious Delaware rally as the Blue Hens rallied from 12 points down late to post a dramatic 70-69 non-conference men's basketball victory over Marist Saturday night at McCann Arena.
Delaware, which improved to 5-3 on the year, trailed 65-53 with 5:33 remaining but outscored the Red Foxes 17-4 the rest of the way. The Blue Hens began the comeback with eight consecutive points to pull within five, before a three-pointer by Marist guard Khallid Hart made it a 68-60 game with 4:12 to play.
But Kory Holden scored in the paint, nailed a corner three-pointer and hit two foul shots to cut the Marist advantage to 68-67 with 1:48 to go. After a Red Foxes miss Anthony Mosley was fouled and hit one free throw, but Hart countered with a foul shot at the other end to put Marist back up one at 69-68 with 46 seconds to play. However Hayes' bucket gave Delaware its first lead since the 14:02 mark of the second half, before the Red Foxes' Phil Lawrence-Ricks missed a contested three-pointer in the final seconds.
“We challenged a couple of guys during our last time out, including Kory Holden, and his response was what you'd expect from a big-time player,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “This is one of my proudest wins in my time at Delaware, it was a major gut-check from our team. Everybody gave us something tonight, and we needed it. I'm just so proud of these guys.”
UD senior forward Marvin King-Davis notched team-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds as he recorded his fifth double-double of the season, while Holden contributed 19 points on the night. Hayes finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Mosley added 13 points and six boards, as both players tied their career-high in rebounds. Delaware held a commanding 44-25 rebounding advantage, including 13-5 on the offensive glass.
Hart, a Newark, Del. native, poured in a season-high 31 points for Marist, which dropped to 2-6 on the year. The Red Foxes, who dropped their third consecutive home game, shot 54.2 percent in the second half but made just one of their final seven shots from the field during the Blue Hen comeback.
The teams remained close throughout the first 14 minutes of the opening half but after a layup by Brian Parker put Marist in front by a point, Delaware hit its next five field goal attempts during a 10-1 spurt that gave the Blue Hens a 26-18 advantage with 3:18 on the clock. However UD missed its final eight shots of the period and Marist took advantage, scoring the half's last eight points to tie the contest at 26-26 heading into the intermission.
The second half was also back and forth early on, before the Red Foxes hit four consecutive shots to open up a 48-43 edge with 12 minutes to play following a K.J. Lee three-pointer. Jeffers hit a foul shot for Delaware but Hart answered with five straight points, increasing the margin to 53-44 and forcing a Blue Hens time out with 10:03 remaining.
Delaware twice fell behind by as many as 12 points, the second time at 65-53 with 5:33 to play, but the Blue Hens took control from there to pull out the victory.
UD will take the next week off for final exams before taking on ACC opponent Boston College next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Conte Forum.
