NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens snapped a three-game losing streak and had four players score in double figures Tuesday evening as Delaware enters holiday break with a 71-60 victory against Vermont.
The Blue Hens (5-5) led for more than 35 minutes of the contest and by as much as 13 in the third quarter, but the Catamounts (4-7) threatened late. Vermont opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to cut Delaware's lead to just three with eight minutes remaining, but the Hens capitalized on their free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory.
The Hens, who returned to the Bob Carpenter Center for the first time in a month, were led by junior Hannah Jardine's (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) 18 points and eight rebounds.
Classmate Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) added 16 points and four assists while senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) collected 14 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Redshirt sophomore Sadé Chatman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) picked up her first career double double in a Delaware uniform with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) nearly missed her fourth double double of the year and finished the night with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Andreana Thomas guided Vermont with 26 points, five assists and four rebounds while Sydney Smith registered 19 points and four rebounds.
“We needed this win in a big time way. We had great crowd support and our fans were behind us. This looked more like a Delaware basketball team and I was happy about that. Tonight we did a much better job on the boards and players were more consistent. Our shooters were knocking down shots and we were also able to attack the rim. We have to keep learning, getting better and staying together as a team, but it was great to have the W going into the holiday break.”
Junior Erika Brown
“It feels great to be back home. It felt like we were on the road forever. We love playing at the Bob and we get a lot of energy off of our crowd. It was nice to get back on our own floor and get the win.”
