RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware women's swimming standout Alyssa Sanders has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Sanders, a team co-captain and cognitive science major from Dover, Del. (Milford High School), was honored for her performance this past week at the US Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
She was one of five Blue Hens who competed at the meet, which included some of the fastest swimmers in the world, including numerous Olympic hopefuls and world record-holders. Among those competing were 18-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and four-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin.
Sanders, the UD all-time record-holder in the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke events, swam to a time of 1:04.76 in the 100 backstroke to place 56th overall and fifth in her heat. Her time was just one second off the Olympic Trials qualifying time. The event was won by University of Texas recruit and national junior record-holder Claire Adams who swam to a time of 1:00.44.
Delaware, which has posted a 7-1 team dual record so far this season, will return to action Jan. 9 when the UD men and women host Drexel and Northeastern for CAA tri-meet at 12 noon at Rawstrom Pool.
Sanders is the third Blue Hen to win CAA Swimmer or Diver of the Week honors this season, joining CAA Diver of the Week Kristina Congdon (Oct. 27) and two-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Morgan Whyte (Oct. 27 and No. 2).
William & Mary's Will Manion was named CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week while Sanders shared the CAA Women's Swimmer of the Week award with William & Mary's Jessie Ustjanauskas.
