NEWARK, Del. – Kristina Congdon highlighted the University of Delaware's performance on day two of the Colonial Athletic Association Diving Championship with a second place finish in the women's 1-meter diving competition at UD's Rawstrom Natatorium.
Brian PayneThe junior's total of 297.15 was a season-best for her and the second-highest point total from a
Delaware women's diver this season.
“Kristina (left) managed to divide the James Madison divers, which was impressive,” said Payne. “JMU has the defending champion [Taryn McLaughlin], plus a very skilled upstart [Olivia Lehman], so for Kristina to dive on that level, she needed to execute very complicated dives with great precision. She was able to do that and we are very happy for her.”
After coming in third place in the women's 3-meter Saturday, Caitlin Stockwell was unable to get to the podium for a second straight night as the junior finished in seventh place with a total of 278.35 in Sunday's 1-meter event.
On the men's side, Patrick McCann (bottom right) rebounded from a poor first dive in the finals to tally a fifth place finish with a score of 318.60, while Colin Hall recorded a score of 300.50, which was good for sixth place.
“Colin and Pat were up against incredibly skilled divers, who were performing at a very high level,” said Payne. “This championship was probably the greatest number of high degree of difficulty divers assembled in this part of the country, so considering that I thought Pat and Colin both
performed well.”
McLaughlin completed the weekend sweep Sunday as the sophomore won the women's 1-meter event with a score of 320.25. David Sanchez of Drexel took home the men's 3-meter crown with a point total of 373.35.
The Blue Hens did not have a senior diver on the roster this season and, after his first season with UD, Payne is anticipating more success in the future for the Delaware diving program.
“If all of our juniors survive the postseason training and come back, I expect nothing but great things next season,” said Payne. “We did not have any seniors this year and I expect an experienced group of divers to return and compete at a very high level.”
The next event for the Delaware swimming and diving team will be the CAA Swimming Championships, which will begin Wednesday at the Richmond Aquatic Center.
