BRONX, N.Y. – Behind a pair of strong outings from starting pitchers Adam Davis and Chad Martin, the University of Delaware baseball team was able to defeat Sacred Heart and Fordham in a non-league doubleheader Sunday.
In game one, Delaware (6-4) downed Sacred Heart 9-0 in the first meeting between the two programs.
The Hens recorded 14 hits against the Pioneers (1-11), including a four-hit effort from Giacchino.
Davis kept the Pioneers' bats quiet as the senior pitched eight innings of scoreless baseball, only allowed three hits, and struck out seven to tally his first win of the season. After missing nearly all of last season because of an arm injury, Sunday marked Davis' first win since May 17, 2013.
Jim Sherman. “Giacchino had a great game with four hits and it was good to see freshman Calvin Scott get his first career hit today with a double.”Every Blue Hen starter registered at least one hit in the winning effort, while Scott led the team with three RBI. Norm Donkin led UD with three runs scored.
In game two, Martin went seven innings and struck out eight batters to earn the win, while Gary Jones provided three hits to help lead the Hens to a 7-3 victory over Fordham.
“In game two, we got another good start for Martin who threw a lot of strikes and had command over his breaking ball,” said Sherman. “Like in game one, our hitting and fielding was good, which is a recipe for success.”
After Delaware drew first blood with a two-run second inning, Fordham took the lead with three runs in the fourth. The Hens then answered with two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Seven Blue Hen hitters tallied an RBI in the victory over the Rams (4-12), while Jones and Brock Niggebrugge were the only UD hitters to register a multi-hit game.
In Sunday's two games, the Blue Hens offense had 25 hits and scored 16 runs, while the pitching staff did not allow an earned run.
The Hens will next be in action Tuesday as Delaware hosts Lehigh at 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
