Idris Places Fourth, Delaware Posts Four Top 10 Finishes at First Day of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Amira Idris continued her outstanding early season performances with a fourth place showing in the long jump and University of Delaware outdoor track & field athletes collected three other top 10 finishes to highlight the first day of the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State Friday afternoon.
Delaware's second and final day of competition will get underway Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Paul Derr Track Facility.
Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.), who won the VCU Invitational title in the season opener last week, placed fourth in a quality field with a leap of 19-feet even to lead all Blue Hen performers.
Delaware's sprint medley team of sophomore Tyler Jackson (School Without Walls/Washington, D.C.), junior Latazah Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del.), senior Toresha Foster (Appoquinimink/Bear, Del.), and junior Shanel Dickens (Cape Henlopen/Milton, Del.) recorded the fifth fastest time in school history with a clocking of 4:08.11 to place sixth overall while senior Katrina Steenkamer (St. Mark's/Rising Sun, Md.) was seventh in the 5,000 meters (17:20.62) and senior Kelsey Evancho (Lenape, N.J./Lewes, Del.) was 10th in the high jump (5-1).
"We had a wonderful performances in unfavorable weather conditions," said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. "I was very pleased to see our ladies stepping up to the competition today. We look forward to a great day tomorrow as we continue to have a positive team energy."
Coleman also placed 13th in the 100 meter preliminaries (12.41), senior Melissa Mazzo (Thomas/Webster, Conn.) was 18th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and broke her own school record with a time of 11:04.82, and freshman Liz McGroarty (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, Pa.) was 19th in the 1,500 meters and set a school freshman record with a time of 4:36.92. The old mark was 4:37.25 by current teammate Betsy Erlanger in 2014.
