3/7/2015 7:23:00 PM | Track & Field - Indoor
BOSTON -- University of Delaware standouts Latoya James and Latazah Coleman each advanced to the finals in their events and Amira Idris placed second in the long jump with a school record leap to lead the Blue Hens Saturday at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.
James, a senior from Kingston, Jamaica (Convent of Mercy Academy) and the defending champion in the 60 meter hurdles, advanced to the finals in that event for the third straight year Saturday as she was third in the preliminaries with a time of 8.64 and was second in the semifinals with a clocking of 8.60. She will compete in the finals Sunday at 11:55 a.m. James also placed second in the 60 meter hurdles event in 2013.
Coleman, a junior from Middletown, Del. (Appoquinimink HS), competed in two events during the day as she won her heat and had the fifth place overall clocking in the 200 meters with a time of 24.15 and placed 10th overall in the 60 meters with a time of 7.69. She did not advance in the 60 meters as only the top nine advanced to the semifinals, but her time in the 200 meters, the second best time in school history, was good enough to qualify her for Sunday's finals at 1:20 p.m.
Idris, a senior from Woodbridge, Va. (Hylton HS), also had a big day for the Blue Hens as she put in a school record leap of 19-4.25 in the long jump to place second overall and earn All-East honors. Sarah Bowens of Connecticut won the event with a leap of 19-8.25. Idris will also compete in the triple jump on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Also on Saturday, the team of Breanna Nicholson (North Brunswick/North Brunswick, N.J.), Carolyn Darr (Penn Valley Area/Centre Hall, Pa.), Tyler Jackson (School Without Walls/Washington, D.C.), and Chelsi Campbell (St. Joseph's Convent/Diego Martin, Trinidad) placed 14th in the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:50.75; senior Monica Hagenauer (Parkland/Schnecksville, Pa.) placed 15th in the weight throw with a toss of 51-3, improving upon her 20th place finish last year; and senior Haley Gorenflo (Plymouth-Whitemarsh/Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) was 19th in the pole vault with a jump of 11-7.75.
In addition to James and Coleman, also competing Sunday for Delaware will be freshman Sarah Hillman in the shot put at 9:30 a.m.
