BOSTON -- It was a banner day for the University of Delaware women's indoor track & field squad Sunday afternoon at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships (ECAC) highlighted by a first place finish by Amira Idris in the triple jump and an all-time best eighth place team showing.
Idris, a senior from Woodbridge, Va. (Hylton HS), became the first Blue Hen woman to capture an ECAC indoor title in a field event as she broke her own school record with a leap of 41-feet, 8-inches
to lead Delaware.
The Blue Hens had four women compete on Sunday's at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center and all four earned All-East honors.
In addition to Idris' heroics, senior Latoya James (Kingston, Jamaica/Convent of Mercy Academy) was second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.69), freshman Sarah Hillman (Dover, Del./Polytech/at left - photo by Kevin Morris) was sixth in the shot put (44-1.25), and junior Latazah Coleman (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/below right/photo by Kevin Morris) finished sixth in the 200 meters (24.19).
On Saturday, Idris also earned All-East honors in the long jump with another school record distance and a second place overall finish.
Those performances earned Delaware 32 points for the three-day meet, placing the Blue Hens eighth in the team standings - the highest finish ever for Delaware and the third straight year in the Top 20 for head coach Wendy McFarlane and her squad.
"This was a great weekend for the team," said McFarlane. "The ladies had a great attitude going into the championship. I am so very proud of their efforts. Amira set out to break the school record in both the long and triple and she did so, a remarkable effort on her part and a well-deserved victory."
The individual title by Idris marks the second straight year that Delaware has captured an ECAC title.
Last year James captured the 60 meter hurdles crown, becoming the first ever UD female student-
athlete to win at the event. James, who also placed second in the 60 meter hurdles in 2013, has now earned All-East honors in the event four straight years - a first in UD history.
Idris jumped to a distance of 41-8 in the triple jump to break her own school record of 40-6.75 in 2012. James ran to a time of 8.69 in the 60 meter hurdles, Hillman had a toss of 44-1.25 in the shot put, and Coleman raced to the second best 200 meters time in UD history with a clocking of 24.19.
Soria Mossberg of Syracuse won the 60 meter hurdles event with a time of 8.58, Ozioma Edokobi of UMBC won the shot put title with a toss of 51-3.75, and Ashley Cunningham won the 200 meters with a time of 23.83.
The meet marked the final competition for the Blue Hens in indoor track & field this winter.
