Delaware Women Win 10 Events, Capture Team Title at Delaware Open

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field squad cruised to the team title as the Blue Hens won 10 events at the Delaware Open at blustery Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The annual meet drew 30 intercollegiate and club teams and nearly 500 athletes from all three NCAA divisions and junior college.
“This was a great day for the Blue Hens today,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “It was a windy day but we got the job done. We had some stellar performances today to set the stage as we
come closer to the CAA championship. Thanks to all the teams, spectators, and alumni who came out to support this event. We look forward to hosting this event again next year.”
Delaware junior Latazah Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del./at left/photo by Mark Jordan) won the 100 meters with a school record time of 11.60, freshman Sarah Hillman (Polytech/Dover, Del.) was a double winner, capturing the shot put and the discus, and senior Monica Hagenauer (Parkland/Schnecksville, Pa.) successfully defended her hammer throw title.
Also for the Blue Hens, sophomore Tyler Jackson (School Without Walls/Washington, D.C.) won the 200 meters, junior Erin McCloskey (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, Md.) captured the 800 meters, freshman Liz McGroarty (Garnet Valley/Malvern, Pa.) placed first in the 3,000 meters, junior Kelly Knauer (Central Bucks East/Furlong, Pa.) won the 400 meter hurdles, and the Hens won both the 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 400 meter relay events.
Coleman, who was also part of the winning 4 x 100 meter relay, captured the 100 meters with a time of 11.60, breaking the previous mark of 11.81 by Dionne Jones way back in 1990. She teamed with
Jackson, junior Chelsi Campbell (St. Joseph's Convent P.O.S./Diego Martin, Trinidad), and sophomore Paige Thompson-Charles (Medgar Evers Prep/Brooklyn, N.Y.) to win the 4 x 100 meter relay in a time of 47.92.
Hillman won the shot put with a toss of 43-9.75 and the discus with a throw of 140-10 and also placed second in the hammer throw (153-10); McCloskey won the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.09, and McGroarty (at right/photo by Mark Campbell) captured the 3,000 meters in 10:21.83.
Also for Delaware, Knauer's winning time in the 400 meter hurdles was 1:06.01); and the 4 x 400 relay team of Knauer, sophomore Megan O'Dell (Strath-Haven/Wilmington, Del.), freshman Tory Engel (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, N.J.), and senior McKensie Walker (Washington Township/Grenloch, N.J.) recorded a winning time of 4:09.39.
Delaware will return to action Apr. 17-18 at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet.
