Delaware Women Win Four Individual Events, Take Second Place at Morgan State Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Seniors Monica Hagenauer, Melissa Mazzo, and Haley Gorenflo each won their events with career best performances to lead the University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field squad to a second place team finish at the 12th annual Legacy Meet hosted by Morgan State University Saturday at Hughes Stadium.
Hagenauer (Parkland HS/Schnecksville, Pa./at left) won the hammer with a toss of 164-feet, 8-inches, Mazzo (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) broke her own school record in winning the 3,000
meter steeplechase with a time of 11:01.89, and Gorenflo (Plymouth-Whitemarsh/Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) captured the pole vault with a personal best leap of 11-10.5. Mazzo broke her previous record of 11:04.7 set earlier this season.
In addition, Delaware sophomore Becky Gessler (Notre Dame/Ellicott City, Md.) captured the 5,000 meters with a clocking of 17:59.53 to highlight the action for the Blue Hens.
Maryland won the team title with a score of 157 points, edging past the Blue Hens, who picked up 145 points thanks to 19 top five finishes. UMBC was fourth followed by Hampton and Norfolk State in the 19-team field. Delaware has now posted a top five team finish in all five scoring meets in which it has competed this spring.
The Blue Hens also posted three second place finishes as senior Alexis Gligor (Woodbury/Woodbury, N.J.) was second in the pole vault (11-4.25), senior Amira Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) was second in the long jump (19-3.25), and senior Hannah Pepper (Cape Henlopen/Lewes, Del.) was second in the heptathlon with a score of 4,261 points. Idris also placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 39-9.75.
Also for the Blue Hens, freshman Sarah Hillman was fourth in the shot put with a UD freshman record toss of 44-5.5 and also finished fifth in the hammer with a throw of 148-8.
Delaware will continue action this week when the Hens compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia Apr. 23-25 and host the Delaware Classic Saturday at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
