Delaware 400 Meter Relay Team Advances at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field team got a big effort from its 4 x 100 meter relay squad Thursday afternoon at the opening day of the 121st annual Penn Relays as the tandem finished fourth in its heat to move on to competition Friday.
The Blue Hens also competed in the 4 x 400 meter relay on Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field but did not advance following an eighth place finish in its heat.
The 4 x 100 meter relay team of junior Latazah Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del.), sophomore Tyler Jackson (School Without Walls/Washington, D.C.), sophomore Paige Thompson-Charles (Medgar Evers Prep/Brooklyn, N.Y.), and senior Amira Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) sprinted to a time of 47.31 to finish fourth in its heat, good enough to qualify for the ECAC
Championship Final on Friday at 1:07 p.m. The time was the second best by a UD 400 meter relay team this season, just .03 off the season-best.
Oklahoma won the heat with a time of 46.20 followed by Houston (46.38) and St. Augustine's (46.76). Delaware finished ahead of Wesley (49.02), Maine (49.06), and Franklin Pierce (50.24). Stony Brook and LSU did not finish.
On Friday, Delaware will compete in the ECAC Championships against Albany, Southern Connecticut, Harvard, Syracuse, Penn State, Towson, UMBC, and UConn.
Delaware also competed in the 4 x 400 meter relay Thursday with the team of senior Breanna Nicholson (North Brunswick/North Brunswick, N.J.), sophomore Carolyn Darr (Penns Valley/Centre Hall, Pa./above - photo by Mark Jordan), junior Michele Simmons (Southern Regional/Manahawkin, N.J.), and senior Toresha Foster (Appoquinimink/Bear, Del.) ran to a time of 4:05.92 to finish eight in the heat.
The Hens were leading the race in the last leg before Delaware's Foster was tripped up by another runner and fell. Despite the mishap, Foster got up and finished the race.
The College of New Jersey won the race with a time of 3:56.08 followed by District of Columbia, Binghamton, Howard, UNCW, Wagner, and Monroe. Delaware finished ahead of Maine.
