PHILADELPHIA -- For the second straight day the University of Delaware's 4 x 100 meter relay team put in an impressive showing as the Blue Hens sprinted to a third place finish in the ECAC Championships at the 121st annual Penn Relays at Franklin Field Friday afternoon.
The Blue Hen quartet of junior Latazah Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del.), sophomore Tyler Jackson (School Without Walls/Washington, D.C.), sophomore Paige Thompson-Charles (Medgar Evers Prep/Brooklyn, N.Y.), and senior Amira Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) cruised to a season-best time of 46.65 to post the third place finish. The Hens had advanced thanks to a fourth place finish in a time of 47.31 in their heat on Thursday.
The time of 46.65 was the third fastest time in school history, trailing only efforts of 46.03 by the team of Vicky Caruso, Asia Hollis, Kristi Cox, and Cristine Marquez in 2010 and a clocking of 46.53 by Caruso, Nijah Dupiche, LaToya James, and Toresha Foster in in 2013.
Harvard won the race with a time of 46.05 followed by Albany (46.50) and Delaware (46.65). Meet host Pennsylvania was fourth (46.74) followed by St. John's, Southern Connecticut, Penn State, Syracuse, and Towson.
Delaware competed in only one other event at the relays, placing eighth in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 4:05.92 on Thursday evening. The Hens were leading the race in the last leg before Delaware's Toresha Foster was tripped up by another runner and fell. Despite the mishap, Foster got up and finished the race.
Delaware will get right back to action on Saturday when the Blue Hens host 11 other college teams and 22 high schools teams from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York for the annual Delaware Track Classic at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. The event begins with field events at 8:30 a.m. with running events getting underway at 10 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
