SAN ANTONIO, Tex. -- A pair of University of Delaware swimmers put in impressive performances this past week at the 2015 Phillips 66 Long Course National Championships at the Northside Swim Center.
Former Blue Hen standout Tim Ware, who graduated from UD this past May, posted a time of 57.03 in the 100 backstroke on Friday to finish 59th overall and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials to be held next June in Omaha, Neb. Many of those who finished ahead of Ware on Friday were foreign swimmers who will not compete in the U.S. Trials.
Also competing for the Blue Hens at the event was rising senior Alex Tooley, who placed 52nd in the 400 individual medley on Thursday with a time of 4:30.02. Tooley, a mechanical engineering major from Fort Collins, Colo. (Fossil Ridge HS), missed the Olympic Trials cut by just 1.8 seconds.
“Tim had a goal four years ago to make the Olympic Trials in 2016,” said UD head coach John Hayman. “He has never faded in his efforts to reach this major feat in swimming. His hard work truly is a reflection of this goal being met.”
A four-year standout for the Blue Hens, Ware (Central Bucks South/Doylestown, Pa.) earned his degree in marketing with minors in economics and advertising with honors this past May.
A 2015 team captain, he earned the team's Jack & Hugh Dougherty Most Valuable Player Award this past season.
Ware captured the Colonial Athletic Association title in the 100 backstroke with a meet record time and also placed fourth in the 200 backstroke and fifth in the 400 medley relay. He set school records in the 50 backstroke (21.39), 100 backstroke (46.90), and 200 backstroke (1:45.6), was an NCAA Provisional qualifier in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, and was 19th at the USS Winter Nationals, becoming the first UD swimmer to advance to the finals at that prestigious event.
