After a stalemate over the first 34 minutes of the game, the Hens got the only offense they would need when Adams (Schalick/Pittsgrove, N.J.) took a shot from the top of the box from 18 yards out but Army West Point goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia misplayed the ball and it sneaked between her legs and into the net. The goal was the fifth career score for Adams, who also scored in Delaware's 2-1 setback at Army in 2014.
The Hens then added some insurance with 6:51 remaining when freshman Riley Curtin (Hershey/Hershey, Pa.) drove down the left side and crossed a pass to the middle where Zelenky (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) kicked the ball off the crossbar and into the net.
Both teams had 10 shots on the day but Delaware sophomore Kailyn Rekos (Groton Dunstable/Groton, Mass.) recorded five saves to earn the shutout. She did not record a save in posting the win over Loyola on Friday.
“I was really happy to see the way our four backs played in front of Kailyn today,” said Grzenda. “Kailyn made the two or three saves she needed to make and the backs did the rest and helped us keep a clean sheet. Anytime we score two goals, we expect to win.”
Army West Point had its best chance to score with 7:10 left to play and the Hens clinging to a 1-0 lead when Jade Jamison got to within 10 feet of the net but the Delaware defense clamped down and kicked the ball away before she could get a shot off.
