CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Host and No. 2 ranked University of Virginia was too much for the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon as the University of Delaware allowed four first-half goals and dropped a 6-1 decision on the final day of the UVa Nike Soccer Classic at Klockner Stadium.
Delaware, which dropped a 4-0 decision to Richmond during the opening round on Friday, falls to 2-2 on the season. Virginia was the highest ranked opponent in school history for the Blue Hens.
After falling behind 6-0, Delaware finally got on the board with 22:09 left to play when freshman Riley Curtin (Hershey/Hershey, Pa.) netted her first career goal from eight yards out off a feed from junior Nikki Adams (Schalick/Pittsgrove, N.J.).
Virginia, which finished as national runner-ups a year ago, got goals from six different players with Brittany Ratcliffe and Courtney Petersen each netting a goal and an assist in a balanced effort.
The Cavaliers outshot Delaware 31-3 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. Delaware goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos (Groton Dunstable/Groton, Mass.) recorded six saves in the nets for the Blue Hens.
Curtin and Delaware senior defender Maddy Parker (Methacton/Eagleville, Pa.) were both named to the all-tournament team.
